Title probably hints you what this is going to be about, but I'll still light it up a bit:
So this journal is basically me rambling on and on about how I felt about this episode. The ups and downs in it and also my feelings towards the show "
ending in general.
Now, this is just me speaking here and sharing my opinions and views, but I like conversation, so - if you feel like it - feel free to share your own opinions too in the comments.^^
Okay, so I'll start with
just talking about the episode "The Last Day of Summer" itself:
Personally I liked the episode. I thought it was a good way to end the series. It was sweet, very emotion awaking and fun with an interesting and new plot and surprising twists and funny moments. I liked how they were able to still offer us something actually new, while still also keeping things "classic"
The setting was good. I mean, we all
knew that the last episode would naturally be the very last day of summer (as the first one was
the first day of summer, it would've just been dump to not the end on
the last day of summer). I think it was nice to go back to "the classic PnF setting" in this episode with Candace obsessing over busting, Doof trying to take of the Tri-State Area, Vanessa having problems with her dad and Phineas and Ferb just doing what they always do: having fun!
I liked how, despite really being nothing new, these really worked in this episode and actually were the main point. It was interesting to have focus be more with Candace and Doof at first. Plus I really love the time mess they made. It really made sense how things would go like that and how in-character the whole thing was (you know, Candace just pressing the button without thinking it too clearly and Doof just going along with it without thinking about the consequences).
More on Candace and Doof, I love how they sort of tied the lose ends with these two. You know, making and end to their busting and inator building. Well, atleast with Doof. I think that Candace would always have that little bust -feature in her and she would every now and then playfully try to bust her brothers (like for ex. in
"Happy New Year!"), but I believe that after everything that happened in this episode - and her losing her brothers
for real (even though only for a moment) - she would be much more careful to not to get too carried away with her busting.
Doofenshmirtz on the other hand, I have to say, I was really surprised that they'd have him turn good for real. Sure, he never striked anyone as "truly evil", but it's still surprising. But I love how sweet it was, how he was ready to do it for Vanessa and how
she was the one to actually make him see that it was just his bitterness and unhappy childhood memories that made try to be evil, not the person he truly was. I believe there's still a bit more to that story though, and I can't wait untill the OWCA files airs!
I also loved seeing Vanessa's and Candace's friendship featured (again! Is it just me or have they really given candessa
ship/frienship more attention lately than canderemy and montessa?) plus how adorable Isabella was when she remembered Phineas (otp!). It was a good thing that the episode really didn't focus on the romance more than that. I mean, we already got AYA and several other shipper fanservice moments in the series, so it was good that this one just focused on family above everything else.
However, there were still some
things that I really would've wished from the final. I mean, I know that the end can't and shouldn't have EVERYTHING in it, but still some things were left un-answered.
Partly I think that they did this in purpose, after all there are a lot of theories within PnF fandom, so maybe it's even better to let some things just to be decited by every viewer themselves. Still, for example, I would've wished some more canon mention of Phineas and Candace's biological father (that stupid tease in
the Star Wars -special
!) or perhaps a slight view on their school life and such. But, those aren't really that serious and I can probably live in the suspense. Probably...(like I said, not EVERYTHING can be solved eventually)
The other main thing is the minor characters. While I
do understand why they'd only want to include the very main cast (I mean, they are the ones we started with, so it's sort of poetic to have them in the finish), but still a lot minor characters were known and loved amongst the fandom, so it would've been nice to seem too. I mean, atleast in the final song, kinda in the
"Carpe Diem" -style like in
"Rollercoaster: the Musical" since it's not too uncommon for the show to have a random Broadway-ish musical out of a sudden (a lot of fourth wall was braken in general anyways). I suppose that in a way a lot of characters did get a cameo in the song in the scenes from former episodes, but that's just not the same...
But overall I still loved the episode a lot and although it did give me an empty feeling in my chest, I can't imagine a better way they could've ended the show (despite the little complains I made above). I'm not saying this is the most perfect way to end a series, but it sure is a fine way to end
Phineas and Ferb. The show has had a long a run and I think it deserved a good ending. I sort of predicted that they might end the show after the fourth season (it seems to be rather common). It's wistful, but the last season has been
one of the best if not
the best season of the show in my opinion so, in a way, I guess it's only fair to end a great show there, right?
Finally, I'd personally rate the episode with
