Operation Queen Squirrelflight

Would you look at that! Warrior Cats art! And everyone probably thought that I'd forgotten all about this fandom...^^;

Well, nope. I just had a dry taste left in my mouth after "The Last Hope" since I wasn't very happy with how many things ended in the book. Now that we're apparently getting some continuation (atleast through novellas and super editions), my curiousity over this series has risen again

This particular drawing is a one that I drew after "Leafpool's Wish". To be honest, I was actually dissapointed in that story. I had high expectations, since I thought that we'd get some more detailed insight on how things were right before the Three (minus Hollyleaf) was born - more specifically how Leafpool and Squirrelflight planned the whole thing. And what did we get? A rushed decision made between them in a hurry that somehow every cat in the Clan bought. I mean c'mon!

Sure, Clan cats are no geniuses, but are we really suppose to believe that they all just bought it without a doubt when notabully plumpy Leafpool and her usual athlete-self Squirrelflight dissappear on a "herb gathering trip" for three days and return with three newborn kits (who by the way were able to walk, talk and see in a biologically impossible time...) and claim Squirrelflight to given birth to Brambleclaw's kits? Really? I mean, it was even noted in the story that the Clan cats had noticed Leafpool gaining weight. Plus it wasn't that big of a secret that she and Crowfeather had a thing, surely someone atleast would've gotten a little suspicious. After all, Squirrelflight according to my knowledge didn't give anyone a slightest hint that she may be pregnant at all, so all of that, the big lie the Three had to live in for so long, just can't be so poorly made and thought-through since everyone believed it so well!

Okay, but to the drawing: In short, it's a representation on how I think their plan went/should've gone:

Well, much like in "Leafpool's Wish" she notices rather early that she's expecting kits and not more than a month later she tells her secret to Squirrelflight, asking for her support and help (much like in the story). Now, the only notable difference between my theory and the actual story is the fact that  I like to think that instead of doing all in the fit of emotion, they planned it carefully and prepared it before hand well.

To put it more simply,  after many argumenst and throwing ideas around, they agree that Squirrelflight will mother the kits and pretend to be the real mother for them (a side note: despite whatever happened in "Bramblestar's Storm", I still like to think Squirreflight is infertile. It just  makes a whole lot more sense that way...). Well, in order to fool everyone into actually thinking that Squirrelflight is pregnant, they start to "fatten her up" (while Leafpool tries eat as little as necessary). Along with actually giving her a fake "queen-tummy", with the help from Leafpool Squirrelflight also starts to act like an expecting queen (you know; purring a lot, morning sickness and over all "mom -like" behavior). Soon as Squirrelflight begans to look convincing enough, they together make a rather public announcement that she's "expecting Brambleclaw's kits".

Now, with all the eyes on Squirrelflight, Leafpool can worry about her real pregnancy in peace while Squirrelflight gets moved into the nursery to wait for the kits to come. She still tries to avoid moving as much as possible and tries to eat more, so her tummy will look convincing enough, now that everyone thinks that she's a queen. Gladly she's pretty safe from doubting gazes since the medicine cat herself is assuring everyone that Squirrelflight is expecting kits.

Well, like in the story, once the moment is coming, Leafpool informs that she'll go look for some herbs faraway and Squirreflight uses her temper to to get out of the nursery and join Leafpool. After they both assure that Clan that "Surely the kits woun't be born for week atleast!"
With that out of the way, they can sneak away from Clan eyes and Leafpool can give birth to the kits in peace. They decide to spend a couple of days in hiding, so Squirreflight can erm..."lose some baby pounds", if you catch my drift (yuck!) and Leafpool can say her goodbyes to the kits, since after they  return to the Camp, she can't be a mother again.

And after the time is right for them, they return to the worried camp where everyone's been freaking out over the missing Squirrelflight. Leafpool lies that the kits were born earlier than suspected, but everything is fine now. Squirrelflight is moved to the nursery once again to care for "her" little kits, Brambleclaw is the proudest tom to walk in Camp and nobody suspects a thing while Leafpool's heart is broken.

~~~~
I admit that Leafpool's Wish was still very touching and sad, but I just  think that it didn't really make anything clearer. With the laws of basic logic, Leafpool and Squirrelflight just had to plan the whole lie and prepare for it somehow. Otherwise it's just ridicilous that everyone believed it right away and no one suspected a thing.
